The Cholera outbreak in Nigeria; the causes and preventive measures

The Cholera Outbreak is getting worse everyday in Nigeria especially in Lagos where there has been multiple reports of Cholera cases that has taken lots of lives.

Here is what you need to know about the cholera outbreak;

1. Cholera is a highly contagious disease with main hallmarks of diarrhea and vomiting.

2. It is caused by taking in food or water contaminated with a bacteria called Vibrio cholerae.

3. This bacteria produces a toxin in the small intestine which makes the body secrete water.

4. It leads to diarrhea and subsequent dehydration, and can turn fatal if care is not taken.

The sources/causes of cholera?

– Well water
– Raw seafood
– Raw fruits and vegetables
– Feaces of an infected person.

How it can be Prevented

• Wash your fruits and veggies thoroughly before eating
• Don’t buy food from roadside vendors
• Boil your water or stick to bottled water
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water and after using the loo
• Eat your food hot.

Maintain proper sanitation

• Dispose waste properly.

It is interesting to know that most people infected with Vibrio cholerae do not develop symptoms, although the bacteria is present in feaces for 1-10 days. These people have the potential of infecting others.

Therefore, it is up to you to protect yourself.

If you have a case of Cholera here is what you should do;

– Rehydrate yourself quickly with oral rehydration salts.

Severe cases should be rushed to the hospital for intravenous fluids.

– Zinc tablets help reduce the length of diarrhea.

How to make ORS at home;

You need
– 1 liter of bottled or boiled water
– 6 teaspoons of sugar
– 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Mix them together and drink.

Cholera vaccines are also available and are recommended for children, adults, and those traveling to riverine areas.
