The Defending Champions Germany are out of the World Cup, this is also another big blow as another top team did not qualify for the next round.

The final matches in Group F saw Germany take on South Korea while Mexico and Sweden did battle. Germany needing a win to make the knockout stages were in command of possession but couldn’t really trouble the Korean defence with goalkeeper Jo keeping his side in the game coupled with Germany’s wastefulness in front of goal.
The second period began as the first had ended with Germany dictating most of the play while Korea sat back trying to catch the germans on the counter. The Germans couldn’t find a way through and paid dearly in the 91st minute when a Son Heung-Min corner found its way to Kim Young-Gwon who scored. The goal was originally ruled as an offside but VAR reviews granted the goal.
Germany in search of an equalizer to save face were left badly exposed at the back with german goalkeeper Neuer in the opposition half as he tried to help his team leaving korean captain Son to score with almost the last kick of the game. Germany continued the trend of champions being eliminated in the group stages with Italy in 2010 and Spain in 2014 also experiencing “the curse of champions”.
