The third place match of the Russia 2018 World Cup placed Belgium and England for slug it out for the bronze medal. Belgium came into the match firing on all cylinders and got on the front foot in the first few minutes as Meunier converted Chadli’s cross who latched on to Lukaku’s pass.
England never really threatened to find a way back as Belgium made it difficult for them, dictating all play throughout the first half. Pickford was on hand to save from De Bruyne and gathering from Lukaku’s heavy touch to keep the score at 1-0 as the game went into half time.
England were out in the second half to find a way back into the game. Belgium still had other ideas and still took hold of play with few glimpses from the English. Headers wide, Belgian blocks and notably Alderweid clearing Dier’s chip over Courtois from the line summes up England’s chances in the game.
Belgium soon snuffed out any hopes of an English equalizer as Hazard latched unto De Bruyne’s pass to beat Pickford at the near post to clinch the bronze medal.

Review of the opening game by host nation Russia and Saudi Arabia from Eddy Owhor
About the game
For me the game was one sided the Saudians played the possession game but the Russians had better individual performances and decent chances, i think in the first 15-20 minutes the both sides were even but the Russians took the game scoring a beautiful game from a good cross and a nice header too.
I thought coming back from the second half the Saudians would have done better but they lack precision and confidence. And I was more impressed by cheryshev, the former Madrid man who later moved to Villarreal for me was the man of the match his first goal was brilliant and the second wasn’t far from the first.
Run down on the goals by minutes…
1st ⚽: came in the 12th minute from a great delivery from golovin to Gazinsky to put the Russians one goal ahead. It came from a corner kick. The Saudians failed to clear their lines.
2nd ⚽: came in the 43rd minute from a well worked counter attack from the Russians a very decent pass from Roman zobnin to cheryshev to double their lead and I think he kept his composure after been closing down by the Saudians great finish.
3rd ⚽: came right after the break In the 71 minute from a cross down the right hand flank from golovin to dzyuba who peels off the back of Omar hawsawi In the box to beat Al- mayoof the goal keeper nice one from the host.
4th ⚽ :came in the 90 minute by a great play from cheryshev who for me grabbed the man of the match performance, I mean that goal was a stunner he puts them four up.
The 5th ⚽:came 4 minutes later was a great free kick from golovin another player who should also be given the man of the match if it’s was to be giving to 2 players. He compounded the Saudians agony after bending a clean free kick to the left hand side of the post to beat the goal keeper..it’s their day I must say.
