Host nation Russia hoped to continue their fairy-tale campaign as they played Croatia for the final semi final spot. The teams were out to cancel each other as the ball travelled all through the pitch without meaningful action. Cheryshev soon took matter into his own hands as he let fly a stunner leaving Subasic rooted and putting Russia in front. Croatia weren’t behind for long as they found their way back into the match from a Kramaric’s header from a Mandzukic’s cross.
Both teams continued cancelling each other out as the first period ended. Second 45 was just as the first, a Perisic’s shot hit the inside of the upright before rolling out as both teams tried to find the sucker punch goal. With no further goals after 90 minutes and additional time, the game went into extra time. Croatia took the advantage in the first period of extra time when Vida’s header evaded everyone as the ball found comfort in the Russian net.
Croatia were expected to hold on to the win as the match got in the second period of extra time. Russia had other ideas as Fernandes rose unmarked in the area to head in Dzagoev’s free kick to force the game to penalties. Subasic denied Smolov, before opposite number Akinfeev stooped Kovacic’s effort. Fernandes drove his effort wide despite rooting Subasic before Rakitic calmly converted to book a date against England for Croatia.
