Places to avoid or live in Lagos and Nigeria during flood
The terrible flood situation that happens in Lagos yearly made us look into the issue of flood in Nigeria.
Actually the rainy season is here again, It’s that time of the year when most Nigerian cities and villages get flooded. It is a yearly ritual & the implications are dire. This study, through geospatial techniques by Chukwudi Njoku reveal LGAs that are at different levels of flood risk vulnerability.
Amongst others, Lagos is the most vulnerable to flooding due to high population densities in high floodrisk zones, with residents of Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos Island, Shomolu & Mushin LGAs most vulnerable. In Anambra, Onitsha South, North & Idemili South are most vulnerable.
Flood mitigation must start with information on flood-risk vulnerability. The risk and vulnerability maps and outputs presented in this study are key for proactive action to be taken by city and rural dwellers, town planners, government agencies and other stakeholders.
This would help mitigate the menace, thereby reducing loss of lives and property, thus, building resilient communities.
