A New Diplomatic International e-passport was inaugurated in Port Harcourt. The Issuance of new diplomatic international electronic passport begins in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State. This effort makes it the third state where it has been launched after Lagos, and Kano states.
The official inauguration ceremony held at the e-passport office of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Port Harcourt located near Boro Park, along Port Harcourt Aba expressway road.
Rivers State governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike performed the flag off as he and his wife, Justice Suzzette Nyesom-Wike formally provided the information for capturing into system.
They were later presented their new 10-year Diplomatic electronic Passport by the State comptroller of Nigeria Immigration Service..
Governor Wike while urging Rivers people to take advantage of the service and obtain their e-passport commended the Nigeria immigration service for the giant stride taken to ensure improved security features of the international passport in keeping with modern migration trend.
The governor Wike particularly noted the benefits of the longer life span of the enhanced e-passport of ten years which will address the problems often encountered with the older edition that last just five years..
He , however, described as unfair the prescribed conditions where an applicant is first required to get his BVN and NIN before qualifying for the e-passport. This, he said, makes it difficult for a child below the age approved to have a bank account to qualify for the passport.
On his part, Rivers State comptroller of Nigeria immigration service, Rasheed Adegoke said the new e-passport requires BVN and NIN to obtain a copy.
He explained that the e-passport that will last between five years will cost N25, 000.00 and the one for ten years will cost N70, 000.00
They all have features that make it difficult for easy damage, has self tracking application, cannot be forged easily and meets international best standard.
