As part of effort in making Rivers State a Medical Hub in Nigeria, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital upgraded equipment at Radiology Department.
Some of the new radiology equipment installed at the radiology department at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital include MRI 1.5 Tesla, CT. Scan, X-ray, Mammogram, Eco, Mobile X-ray, and Fluoroscopy.
The entire building housing the equipment was also removed.
Contract for this phase of upgrade was awarded in 2017 by the Wike administration at the cost of six point nine million dollars.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike commissioned the equipment.
He said the state government will begin the employment of qualified health personnel soon into the state service.
These personnel will shore up the manpower need in the health sector.
Governor Wike said his administration is committed to quality healthcare for Rivers people.
He stated that the provision of state of the art medical equipment is a right step taken to dutifully engage the highly qualified medial doctors available at various health facilities in the state.
At the commissioning, the governor approved the contract for a total furnishing of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. He promised to release 70 percent of the funds to the contractor next week.
Governor Wike assured that the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and the College of Medicine which are his initiatives will continue to attract government investment.
The governor assured resident doctors that will release the outstanding funds meant for their training.
He explained the need for government to reconstruct the Rivers State School of Nursing and upgrade it into a degree awarding institution.
It will then become a part of the Hospital. The governor said his administration has started the construction of a State of the Art Government House Clinic that will be commissioned next years May and will be opened to the public and the less privileged in the state.
Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Mrs Caroline Wali said with the upgrade of radiology equipment at the teaching hospital, related cases will no more be referred to outside health facility.
Chief Medical Director of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Dr Friday Aaron said the Radiology Department is a flagship department and with the new equipment, the hospital will now have increase capacity to serve the entire South-South and South-East regions.
Chairman, of Port Harcourt local government area Victor Ihunwo pledge intensive enlightenment within his council on the need for residents to take such health concerns to the hospital.
